Know Yourself – Working in Healthcare Series

A common interview question for positions in the healthcare field – or many other industries for that matter – is some form of “What is your why?”

Why do you want to go to medical school?

Why do you want to explore this topic in research?

Why are you passionate about public health?

In order to answer any of these questions it begins with conceding – the answer does not have to be exactly what the interviewer wants to hear; it should be a truthful, well-thought-out- message about your desire to pursue a path in healthcare based on your passions, desires, and values.

The response is personal and unique to you.

This of course requires getting to know yourself a little deeper…

Reflective questions to get you started:

What about a future in healthcare makes you come alive?

Is there anything in the world of healthcare that scares you?

When it comes to productivity, what is your ideal setting? (around people, in a secluded area, etc.)

How do you approach problem solving? Do you have a thought-out, detailed process? Or, do you prefer a more of a guess and check method?

The answers to these questions may guide you to working in the ER, or for the National Institutes of Health, the something missing…
