
Job Resources for Students who Identify as Black, Latinx, or Indigenous

As a student who identifies as Black, Latinx, or Indigenous your unique experiences and culture play a huge role in who you are and how you view the world. Employers are very interested in your experiences and your perspective! Although the search may seem difficult at times, keep in mind that you have resources available to assist you, as well as support to guide you along the way. As you navigate through your time at Duke and begin to explore experiential opportunities, internships, or jobs, it is important for you to know the resources that are available to help you throughout the process. Below are some tips and resources to help you with your search!
- Make sure to devote time to your search! It may be helpful to set small milestone goals to accomplish.
- Highlight your background in your resume, cover letter, and during the interview process! Do not hesitate to schedule an appointment to have your resume and/or cover letter reviewed or to receive interview coaching or practice interviewing.
- Evaluate and identify whether or not the companies you are interested in have diversity initiatives or if they honor diversity. Some resources to help you with that research are:
- Diversity Inc– Lists the top 50 companies for diversity
- Great Place To Work– Provides list publications of “great places to work” based on various categories
- Diversity and Inclusion Index– Designed to measure the relative performance of companies against factors that define diverse and inclusive workplaces
- Take advantage of your Duke Alumni by connecting with them through the Duke Alumni Directory or LinkedIn, to hear their stories and see what they have to say about their experience with the company.
- Become familiar with Handshake, as this is the Career Center’s online portal for you to schedule advising, drop-in, or resume review appointments, review and register for events/workshops, and search for jobs and internships.
- Diversify your search by looking outside of Handshake, some additional resources for you to look into are:
- LinkedIn-Social network specifically designed for career and professionals to connect
- INROADS-Mission is to develop and place talented minority youth in business and industry and prepare them for corporate and community leadership
- The LAGRANT Foundation-Goal is to open the proverbial door for minorities by providing the necessary resources and tools not commonly available to many minorities entering the fields of advertising, marketing and public relations
- SEO Career-Offers internships in many areas and roles at partner companies across the country
- The Getty Foundation-Aims to encourage greater diversity in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, the program funds internships at cultural organizations across Los Angeles, including at the Getty Center and the Getty Villa
- T. Howard Foundation-Dedicated to improving the participation of diverse and underrepresented groups in the media and entertainment industry
