Leverage LinkedIn’s Follow Button

2-minute read

You may notice people you know reposting content that highlights roles people are recruiting for on LinkedIn. I often do the same. I recommend that you consider following those people! I often share this advice: “When you come across a recruiter, hiring manager, or industry leader posting interesting opportunities or valuable content, you don’t have to send a connection request — follow them!

Following someone on LinkedIn gives you access to their posts, including job listings, hiring updates, their interactions on the website, and more without needing a direct connection. It’s a low-effort way to stay plugged into roles and trends in your field.

Many professionals consistently share opportunities. Following them is an easy way to expand your job search and industry awareness without extra work. Personally, I reserve my connection requests for people I would like to learn from or build a relationship with in the future. I typically lead with that when sending the note too.

For the record, always send a note if you’re connecting with someone you do not know personally. Ask yourself: Why are you requesting to connect? Where did you meet them? What stands out about them? A thoughtful message gives the other person the context to decide whether they’d like to accept your request.

But when in doubt — follow them!

If someone shares or reposts a role that sparks your interest, take a moment to explore the person’s profile and consider following them. It’s a simple way to stay in the know.
