Handshake Filters Summer Steps: 20-Minute Wins

Quick tasks with a big impact – Get ready for Fall recruiting!

Review your saved searches to see what interests are no longer relevant or need refining. If you prefer, Handshake will email when new roles are added that fit your saved search criteria. Be sure to update your communication preferences to receive helpful and relevant outreach from Hanshake.

By cleaning up this section first, you will get an idea of what additional saved searches and filters you need to create.

Open positions are added in real time and, Employers get to select the tags and criteria connected to the job or internship posting. The good news is, new opportunities are added all the time. The bad news is, the tags and keywords you think to use may not be the same as what the employer thinks to use. By creating multiple searches with varying key words and filters you are more likely to find the jobs and internships of interest to you.

For example, if you want to work in Project Management, you may start with the keywords “project management”. But you might also want to include filters for specific majors, location, or employer. The more filters you add, the narrower your list of opportunities. You can navigate around this by having multiple project management searches:

  • Use different keywords with the same location filter.
  • Have a search just for an employer (or list of employers).
    • Yes, you’ll get all the jobs they post but you may find something else that you’re interested in.
  • Avoid unnecessary filters that just add to the shorter list of results.
    • Majors may not matter as much depending on what you searching for.
    • Industries may not matter given than many different industries hire for job roles across other industries.
      • For example, healthcare and retail/consumer goods companies hire software engineers.

On the “Jobs” page, you may see an alert in blue that encourages you to update preferences to “see more relevant jobs”. Do this.

Handshake uses your preferences to push jobs and internship opportunities to you. Without this information, or with outdated information, you will not get the most out of Handshake.
