You’ve probably seen the news:
On September 19, 2025, President Trump announced a new $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applications. The H-1B is the most common work visa for international graduates pursuing long-term employment in the U.S.
This has left many international students feeling uncertain about their future. As things change, here are three steps international students can take to stay ahead:
1. Stay Calm and Keep Applying
Keep applying for internships and full-time jobs in the U.S.! Many employers continue to hire international candidates despite the news.
It’s still unclear how the proposed H-1B fee will be implemented. For example, it might not apply to students already in the country changing status from F-1 to H-1B. Much is still unknown, and more updates are expected soon.
Focus on what you can control: submit strong applications, carry proof of your visa status, check your I-94 after travel, and keep your address and employer information current.
2. Explore Other Visa Options
The H-1B might not be your only option. Look into alternatives such as the L-1, O-1, H-1B1 (Chile & Singapore), E-3 (Australia), and TN (Canada & Mexico) visas. Knowing all your options can help you plan ahead and stay flexible. More info here.
3. Search Globally
Many Duke graduates qualify for work or job-seeker visas in locations such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Japan, and Hong Kong. The Career Center can help you find a path that fits your goals.
It’s tough out there right now, but we’re here to support you as policies change. Take a deep breath and keep moving forward!
