As a first-year undergraduate student you may have heard that you can start scheduling career advising appointments with the Career Center as of November 1st, which is exciting and gives you a chance to dive deeper in to getting to know yourself and exploring your options. This blog will provide you with a little more context to what a career advising appointment is and what you should expect when scheduling one!
Career advising appointments are 30-minute appointments that students and recent alums (up to 1 year post graduation) can schedule through Handshake to meet one on one with a career advisor. Some of the areas a career advising appointment can be helpful are to:
- Guide you in learning more about your self
- Learn how to leverage your strengths and weaknesses
- Explore your interests
- Engage in career exploration
- Conduct interview prep and practice interviewing
- Strategize your job or internship search
- Discuss offer/salary negotiation
As you consider whether you should schedule a career advising appointment or not, please know that:
- The Career Center is a resource to guide you in your decision-making process and provide needed support
- You don’t have to have it all figured out, in fact, it’s ok to schedule an appointment to say, “I need help” and we’ll help you figure out what that looks like for you
- The first appointment is usually for the two of you to get to know each other, unless there is a time-sensitive or pressing issue that you would like to address
Also, note that if you have quick questions or would like to have documents reviewed (resume, cover letter, etc.), Drop-in Career Advising would be better suited.
We are looking forward to meeting you in career advising appointments, drop-in career advising or some of our upcoming Career Center events!
