Actuaries are in the business of quantifying risk and uncertainty. They use their backgrounds in math, statistics, or data science to determine the costs of risks and, make suggestions on limiting the costs.

Primarily, actuaries are hired by insurance companies. The work of an actuary can have a direct impact on policy premiums for various insurance policies. Actuaries can have a specific focus like healthcare, life insurance, property, enterprise, public sector, and retirement.
