This article summarizes insights from the Career Center program, “What Nobody Tells You: Technical Interviewing”, which was held in October 2024. The event featured employer representatives from Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, NetApp, and Accenture.

Be willing to ask for help
Technical interviews are about your ability to learn. Employers don’t expect you to know everything. They appreciate when you keep the technical interview moving along by being transparent about whether you know the answer to a question/prompt.
Show the interviewer who you are
Tailoring your resume allows the interviewer to have a good understanding of who you are as you enter the technical interview process.
Demonstrate confidence and communication skills
Employers appreciate a candidate who is builds rapport and makes the interview conversational.
Ask debrief questions to stand out at the end of the interview
Examples: How do you think it went? How important is this aspect of the interview for this particular role?

Literally think out loud
Saying what you are thinking aloud gives your interviewer(s) valuable insights into your thinking process, including how you problem-solve and take ownership.
