December is usually the month we start taking our goals a bit more seriously again. Like finally deciding to (re)commit to that thing you’ve been procrastinating on. My intention with this month’s list is to encourage you to do some of that necessary work as soon as you can. It’s never too early to prioritize the things you hope to accomplish.
- Refine: Be honest with yourself. Is your current job search plan working? If the answer isn’t a resounding yes, it’s time to switch it up. Don’t keep plugging away at something that isn’t delivering results. If you’re stuck, call in some support (see closing statement).
- Plan: Create a LAMP or Target List for the coming month. I’ll include an example target list below.
- Strategize: December is a time when people start winding down. If you’re hoping to network, keep in mind that folks may be traveling or wrapping up last-minute projects/goals. You may not get the same responsiveness as in other months.
- Rest: Sometimes the best thing you can do is take a break and recalibrate. If your job search feels overwhelming, take a moment to reflect on your goals and how you’d like to achieve them.
- Free Space: Did I miss anything? Add it to your list.
Are you ready to take it one step further? Consider booking an appointment with a Career Advisor or reach out to someone you trust for support. Every action item listed above can be supported by the incredible team at the Career Center.
P.S. Everything I share is focused on helping you explore opportunities in the United States.
LAMP lists can be a bit clunky so here’s my approach:
1. Identify a list of companies you’d like to work for. Doesn’t matter how you know about them (e.g. conference sponsor, friend works there, dream org, etc.)
2. Identify the person or people, including alumni, who can help you learn more about that organization and/or position. Bonus if they can help you with a referral.
3. Using 1 – 3 list how excited you are about the opportunity. 3 = High & 1/0 = Low
4. Check out their careers pages to see if they have roles you’d like to do.
4b. I’d encourage you reorder this process/excel to work for you. Maybe motivation comes last on your list.
5. When you’re done sort by motivation so you can apply and build relationships for those coveted roles first.
Bonus: Set a timer for each COLUMN. Maybe 30 – 45 minutes, so you’re not forced to go too deep into the rabbit hole at once.
