Duke in London-Arts is a 4-week, 1-course program for students who wish to become familiar with London’s cosmopolitan character and experience the work of London’s culturally diverse arts sectors, both mainstream and alternative, including theatre, dance, music, visual art, and the tourism industry. The course will cover key issues surrounding arts production and funding in the UK, as well as discuss the importance of cultural production to national identity in the global context.

Duke in New York (Summer) Arts & Media
You’ve heard the popular saying, “If you can make it in New York, you can make it anywhere!” As catchy and lovely as it sounds, the slogan does neither reflects real life nor the guiding principles of this course. “Being and Becoming New York” is an immersive, five-week learning experience centered around the idea that New York is not just anywhere, and that it attracts and nurtures residents that are anything but ordinary. We will learn to appreciate what the model, cultural influencer and quintessential New York scenester Quentin Crisp meant when he amended the popular adage to say, “If you make it in New York, you’ll fail everywhere else!”

The Duke in New York Creative Industries (Fall) program immerses you in one of the world’s great cities, where you develop not only your intellectual skills but also your professional network.
The program’s core course—“The Arts, Culture, and Performance of New York”—offers an overview of New York’s arts, culture, and performance ecosystem. Each week, we attend and study curated events in art, dance, film, music, film, and theater. Along the way, students meet and network with leading professionals drawn from New York’s arts, culture, and performance organizations.
A second core course is a practicum keyed to an internship of your choice in the professional worlds of art, culture, and performance.

Duke in L.A. is an intensive academic and pre-professional program that introduces students to the rich visual and cultural production of America’s second largest metropolis. Los Angeles is the international center of the media and entertainment market as well as a global melting pot of four million people from nearly 150 countries. These unique qualities provide the program with a vibrant, city-wide learning space.
The Duke in L.A. experience includes two seminars taught by Duke faculty, a student-selected course at the University of Southern California (often at the School of Cinematic Arts or the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism), and a practicum course which includes an internship with a business or organization of each student’s choice. Students have interned at film, television, and media companies, as well as museums, community nonprofits, and start-up/technology companies.
