Navigating College as a First Gen

Being a First Gen college student can be very overwhelming. It can be difficult navigating a new experience where you are forced to adjust. Many times, First Gens do not feel well quipped or prepared to tackle the college experience. This can lead to many other issues such as mental distress and poor academic performance. What is a First Gen College Student? A First Gen College student is classified as a person whose parents did not complete a degree at a 4-year university. This may result in lack of college preparation for the student.

Things you can do as First Gen College Student to increase success in college:

  1. Build a team. This team can consist of family, friends, co-workers, classmates, mentors, and professors. It is important to have circle to ask questions, seek guidance and discuss ideas to help you learn more about how to achieve your career goals.
  2. Understand and explore your campus resources. Take time out to visit resource centers and the services they provide as you may discover opportunities that are tailored to your needs as a First Gen student. Many students fail to explore the ways in which their institution can assist them during their time.
  3. Share your thoughts and concerns with those around you. You may feel as if you are alone in this process, but I can assure you that many students, especially First Gen students have similar questions, concerns, and experiences on campus.
