Explore Careers with Informational Interviews

Not sure what you want to do after graduation? Informational interviews are one of the easiest and least stressful ways to explore careers.

An informational interview is a short conversation with a professional to learn about their career path, role, or industry — not a job interview. There’s no pressure and no expectation that you’re applying for a job.

Duke Career Hub’s Informational Interviewing Guide walks you through:

  • How to reach out to professionals (with sample messages)
  • What questions to ask during the conversation
  • How to follow up with a thank you note
  • Ways to build confidence and connections early

Through informational interviews, you can learn what different careers are really like, discover helpful internships or skills, and start building a professional network — even without a clear career plan.

If you have questions or want help getting started, you can always attend drop-in advising or schedule a career advising appointment via Handshake with a Career advisor.
