Insights, advice, and perspectives from the Career Center
The Career Fair is more than an opportunity to apply for a job. It’s a chance to explore, make connections, and learn about employers and industries.
Christina Plante shares some tips to help you make the most of your experience.
What’s the biggest misconception about career fairs?
You only attend a career fair to secure a specific position.
The reality? Career fairs are also a great way to explore industries and connect with employers, even when they don’t have a current opening that fits your interests.
You also don’t have to meet every qualification listed for a position. Curiosity, preparation, and a strong conversation can go a long way.
How can you make the most of a 5-minute conversation?
Get creative with your introduction. You don’t have to start with your name and major. Find a way to naturally share what interests you about the company or opportunity.
Do your research. Know the basics about the organization and prepare a few thoughtful questions, especially questions you can’t easily answer by visiting the company’s website.
Know your strengths. Identify three strengths you’d like to convey and think about specific experiences that demonstrate them.
Show your enthusiasm. Let your energy and genuine interest come through in the conversation.
What mistakes should you avoid?
Don’t show up without a plan. Before the fair:
- Research the employers you’re interested in
- Practice your introduction
- Prepare questions
- Bring printed résumés—there may not be a printer available onsite
What makes students stand out?
Employers notice students who can clearly explain why they’re interested in the company, industry, or role.
Research shows that you’ve taken the time to learn about the organization, while thoughtful questions can lead to a more meaningful conversation.
As you prepare for the Career Fair, remember: You don’t have to be perfect. Be prepared, be curious, and put your best foot forward.
