Are you a journalist who loves data or a data specialist who loves journalism? NJ Advance Media, which produces content for NJ.com and The Star-Ledger, has an exciting opportunity for a data journalist to join our dynamic and fast-paced news reporting team covering the entire state of New Jersey.
We’re looking for a person who can use existing data sets, or build new data sets, to explain and amplify news events, trends and quality-of-life issues in the Garden State. This reporter would be producing the kind of stories that our subscribers and would-be subscribers find irresistible and relatable.
You’d be joining the newsroom’s largest team of reporters covering topics ranging from breaking news and public safety to weather and real estate. In addition, you’d provide support to investigative, politics, health and other topics-based teams in a newsroom that fully embraces collaboration without silos. You’d be working side-by-side with a friendly, hard-working and ambitious group of reporters and editors with decades of experience covering New Jersey from every angle.
When you see data, you see opportunity. This position will be primarily focused on pitching and reporting quick-turn stories that connect the lives of New Jersey residents through data.
You have endless curiosity for what makes the people of New Jersey tick. You want to comb through information from the Census Bureau and other publicly available data sets. You want to learn how to take one data set and use it to tell a dozen stories.
You’re comfortable with using or learning to use tools like Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, SQL, Python or R.
You want to find the communities in our state that deserve more coverage and tell their stories through data.
You want to continue building your skills through continuing education opportunities like conferences and course work.
About the role:
You will produce two to three data stories a week that help explain daily life in New Jersey.
You will create data visualizations through programs such as Datawrapper and Flourish to enhance stories and help readers understand and search the data.
You will interview experts, officials and regular folks to strengthen stories and build sources. You will collaborate with other reporters, multimedia journalists and social media specialists throughout the newsroom for joint coverage.
For this position, we are looking for a candidate with:
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications or related field
- A minimum of two years in journalism with a proven ability in reporting and writing required, preferably including experience in data journalism.
- Possession of a clear and engaging writing style
- An ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
- A sound understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
- Experience using social media to find stories and promote content
- An ability to work collaboratively with editors
