The Case for Multiple Mentors

It is frequently recommended to find expert advice on how to reach our goals; someone who has been there before and can share that “inside knowledge” to give us a competitive edge. We may believe that if someone provides us with the steps or a map, we can simply follow that path to success. In contrast, organizational psychologist Adam Grant says, “The good news is that to start moving, you don’t actually need an exact map. All you need is a compass to gauge whether you’re heading in the right direction.”

I recently listened to this podcast and found so many helpful tips that can apply to the career development process. One point in particular is the evidence that having multiple mentors (instead of relying on one expert) to support your growth has been shown to be very effective. As Grant shares, “Different mentors are going to give you different directions,” and, “Multiple mentors are able to point out different landmarks.”
