FIRE HYDRANT MECHANIC
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision, this position is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining a variety of fire hydrants throughout the water distribution system. Serves as lead worker. Reports to a Water Distribution Operations Coordinator. There are two (2) levels of Maintenance Mechanic distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs complex fire hydrant repairs, field tests, and adjustments to a wide variety of fire hydrants; diagnosis, repairs, and refurbishes fire hydrants; maintains a parts, tools, and equipment inventory; provides training to co-workers as appropriate. Responds to and resolves a variety of customer inquiries and complaints; inspects work performed by the fire hydrant contract inspectors and provides technical assistance or guidance as necessary; ensures compliance with Newport News Waterworks standards. Performs administrative work to include retrieving or entering information, generating, or completing work orders and material pick tickets. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE • Hydrant Maintenance –Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment used in the inspection, installation, and repair of hydrants to include procedures for diagnosing malfunctions as well as the operation and maintenance of assigned vehicles or equipment. • Safety – Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to the operation and repair of hydrants.
REQUIRED SKILLS • Time Management – Plans and organizes daily work routine. Estimates expected time of completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly. Implements work activities in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules. Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology. • Interpersonal Relationships– Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees, managers, and representatives from other departments and organizations, and the public.
REQUIRED ABILITIES • Communication – Excellent ability to communicate ideas effectively so others will understand to include preparation of reports. Excellent ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and/or in writing. Ability to handle a variety of customer service issues with tact and diplomacy in a confidential manner. • Critical Thinking – Use of logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate complex situations and identify the best approach to complete a job.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Maintenance Mechanic I – Requires a high school diploma and 1-2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Maintenance Mechanic II – Requires a high school diploma and 3-5 years of related experience with some lead or supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment medical evaluation and audio examination.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS • Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders. • Some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (10-20 pounds). SENSORY REQUIREMENTS • Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. • Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
