Internships at the Historical Center of York County provide opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students to become familiar with the inner workings of archives. Through this partnership interns can receive practical experiences to help clarify and further career goals. These internships are for experience and are not paid positions. Internships are open to college undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates.
The primary goal of an archives internship at the Historical Center of York County is that interns will gain a better understanding of what it means to work in an archives or research library, leaving with skills that will better prepare them for careers in the field.
This primary goal is accomplished by focusing on 4 secondary goals of archival internships at the Historical Center of York County:
Interns will gain valuable experience with arranging and describing incoming archival collections.
Interns will be given the opportunity to learn how donations are processed.
Interns will gain experience with cataloguing archival materials.
Interns will gain technological skills specific to the discipline, better preparing them for the job market.
The Archives Specialist will work directly with Archives Interns to accomplish the above goals by completing meaningful projects during their scheduled work days.
The Historical Center of York County, located in York, South Carolina, opened in 1989 to serve as the repository for York County court records and to collect and preserve the cultural heritage of York County and the Carolina Piedmont. In 1990, a major donation of family genealogies compiled by Joseph E. Hart Jr. helped establish the current archival collection. Since its creation, the collection has grown to include family papers, historic photographs, business records, local newspapers, rare books, and church records.
The archival holdings include York County case files and minute books for Court of Common Pleas, General Sessions, Court of Equity and Circuit Court, as well as Will Books, Inventories and Appraisals, Voter Registrations, Sheriff Records, and Coroner Inquests ledgers. In addition, the archive houses public donations including garden clubs, literary societies, family papers, store ledgers, church records, business records, school memorabilia, rare books, and photographic collections.
