Being Prepared to Receive an Offer: A Few Considerations to Boost Your Confidence

“We’re excited to offer you the position of X.” How do you respond? I bet most of you would respond with excitement. But what’s next in the conversation? Here are some ways to be prepared for receiving an offer so you receive it well and with confidence.

  • Know the stages of receiving an offer. This Indeed guide describes the offer in two stages, the informal offer notification and the official offer phase.
    1. Informal offer notification – Here are two ways this might happen–both could come through phone or email. An informal notice to let you know an offer is coming OR an informal notice to understand your expectations (salary, start date, location, etc) and what offer details will make you more likely to accept. (If you don’t know your salary expectations, check out your market value in the Steps for Search Success’s negotiation section.)
    2. Official offer phase – You receive the official offer through phone or email. Congratulations! If you receive the offer by phone, remember to ask how the offer will be shared with you in writing.
  • Anticipate the offer.
    • Imagine your response to the initial statement. Offers can produce a range of emotions based on your experience. It’s great to express excitement and appreciation for the offer, but we encourage you not to commit to the role until you’ve fully reviewed the offer details.
    • Decide what information you may need. Below are some examples.
      • When do you need to provide an answer to their offer?
      • How will the official offer be shared with you (if it hasn’t been), and when?
      • Who should you contact with questions you have about the offer?
    • Think about what you’re going to say.
      • How will you express appreciation for the offer?
      • How will you ask for the information you need?
      • How will you end the conversation?
      • This WayUp Guide gives examples of responses for both offers via phone call and those via email.

After receiving an offer well, you move to the next phases of closing your search including: evaluating your options, negotiation (if you choose to), and accepting or declining the offer.
